Local schools cut junk in vending machines

Grabbing a snack from a school vending machine isn't as sweet an experience as it was years ago — and that's a good thing.

In many schools, soda and other sugary drinks have been replaced by water and low-fat milk. Granola bars and yogurt have taken the place of candy and gum. And school cafeterias are offering wider varieties of healthy food.

Better nutrition is catching on.

"In the last few years people have been paying closer attention," said Kim Roll, food service director for the Kenmore-Town of Tonawanda Schools and president of the Erie County School Nutrition Association. "It's coming together. The change is coming."

I was amazed the amount of junk food available to kids at school where my kids went/go. I recall back in the day, the nasty, but 'balanced' lunches served at school-if you had the money ytou could buy an ice cream sandwich........

Glad to see the schools are starting to think about this form a health standpoint as opposed to the 'financial contribution' they were receiving from the vendors.
